This lecture juxtaposes the rich material world of ancient Lydia with its lack of archaeological context, emphasizing the real damage of plunder and the continuing threat to archaeological sites and museums.

The Age of Slave Apologies: The Case of Liverpool, England
Dr. Mark Christian, Associate Professor of Sociology and Black World Studies, MUH
Professor Christian uses the case study of Liverpool’s apology for its role in the transatlantic slave trade to explore the concept of slave apologies.
He will examine the substance of such an apology and what it has meant for Liverpool’s Black communities in the contemporary sense.

The Cultural Politics of Kara Walker

This talk will focus on the controversial themes found in the work of Kara Walker, a visual artist who became well known for creating installations consisting of figurative black silhouettes mounted on white walls. Professor Price will address reactions to Walker's work in the exhibition My Complement, My Enemy, My Love at the Whitney Museum.
