- Make sure to study with a trusted private teacher
at least one year before your audition (studying with a qualified
private teacher greatly
increases chances for admission, although some exceptions are
possible depending on each case).
- Participate in honor, region and state auditions,
and perform with high-level groups as much as possible.
- Purchase a
professional model clarinet as early as possible. If you do
not have a high end instrument a few months
before your audition, we could select one together during your
first semester at Miami. Auditionning on a professional instrument
often
yields better results even if the instrument is borrowed.
- Formulate an idea of your career plans to share
with the audition committee; Majors in Music Education, Performance,
and other fields are all valued equally, and my goal is to help
you reach your career aspirations, whatever they might be. Please
note
that scholarships are awarded to Music Majors only. Music Minors
should address special scholarship requests to their Major Department
or
School.
- Schedule a complimentary lesson with me prior
to your audition during a weekday. Parents are encouraged to attend!
- A reminder that there are two separate application
procedures: Application to Miami University as well as to the
Department of Music. I suggest having already applied to Miami
when you come
for an audition, if possible.
