Background materiale

I am a native of Berkeley, California. Prior to my coming to Miami University in 1978, I taught at the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-EAUCLAIRE and FORT HAYS STATE UNIVERSITY (Kansas). I recently retired after 25 years as principal trumpet of the Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra and the Middletown (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra, and have had previous experience in that role with the Tidewater Music Festival (Maryland), the Peter Britt Music Festival (Oregon), the International Festival at Round-Top, Texas, among others. My orchestral background also includes performances with the San Francisco Opera and Ballet Companies, and the Metropolitan Opera Company (New York).
I am an active free-lancer well-versed in piccolo trumpet, the other small trumpets, and B-flat and flugelhorn concepts and styles, and perform professionally in those idioms throughout the Cincinnati-Dayton area in large and small group settings. In addition, I am the founder and music director of the Cincinnati Herald Trumpet Ensemble.

Current projects

I am also active as a composer and arranger, compositions and arrangements written for the Miami University Trumpet Ensemble have been published by Crown Music Press of Chicago, Tromba Publications of Denver, and by my own publishing firm, Triplo Press. I also contribute on a regular basis to the Journal of the International Trumpet Guild, the group for which I have served terms as secretary, vice president, and president. In 2005 I was a recipient of the Guild's Award of Merit.

Since 1979 I have been a member of the faculty of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp
, Twin Lake, Michigan, where I have taught, performed as principal trumpet with, and conducted student and faculty jazz ensembles. Beginning in 1982 I was involved on and off as
Just for the record, I am married to Vera Hørven and have two sons, both of whom are in the music business as performers and producers. Evan writes for Hollywood, has several successful software programs on the market for sound editing, and owns Integral Recording Studio in Minneapolis. Ryan, also in Minniapolis and the leader of the former rock group 12RODS, is now a solo performer working extensively in electronic sound with his new group, Mystery Palace.
conductor of the Blue Lake International Jazz Ensemble for its three-week European tours to Belgium, Austria, Germany, France, Denmark, and the Netherlands, and served as a member of the Blue Lake in Bavaria faculty as director of its international jazz ensemble. My most recent sojourn in the international capacity was taken in 2008.

At Miami University I work as chair of the Jazz Ensemble Program, conduct Miami's internationally recognized trumpet ensemble and, of course, teach trumpet. I am also the founder of Miami's annual Southwestern Ohio High School Jazz Festival, held in the spring of each year. In 1997 I was involved with the inauguration of MIami's 20th president and was the subject of a feature article by the university's Department of journalism.

During the past few years, I have become increasingly involved with website design and am now responsible for the websites for the Miami Univeristy Department of Music.

Pedagogical/studio/audition matters
(Click here for studio related syllabi, requirements, etc)

Working from the basis of knowledge of concepts of sound (i.e. the 'total performance'), the development of basics (tone production, finger control, flexibility, and articulation) is paramount to the success of any trumpeter. Using classic and standard etude, solo, ensemble, and orchestral literature, the curriculum in the studio digs deeply into general technique, style, musicianship, and performance practice. Other aspects, such as stage presence and pedagogical tools and techniques are addressed and studied.

The school own a cache of higher-pitched trumpets for use by students as they study styles and repertoire germane to their progress, interests and ability. The trumpet studio is also equipped with SmartMusicTM and is now used extensively for teaching and practice purposes.

The studio routinely has between 14 and 20 carefully selected trumpet majors. Acceptance into the program as either music performance or music education majors is done through an audition process that takes place between December and April of each academic year. Details can be found on the Admissions Page of the Music Department's website.

The Miami University Trumpet Ensemble

One of the things that I am most proud of is the development of the Miami University Trumpet Ensemble. In 1983 such an ensemble was a rare bird indeed. Click here to get to the web pages devoted to that organization.

On a beautiful campus and in a safe and challeging atmosphere, Miami University (consistently among the top rated schools in America), the Department of Music, and the trumpet studio all have unique and exciting traditions to offer its students. Persons interested in pursuing further information can find it on the university's website or through direct contact with me.
