In a celebration of Asian cultural heritage and artistic expression, Elevar Gallery is set to host "dragon, etc.," a group exhibition featuring interpretations of the mythical dragon figure.

The exhibition, organized by the Creative Asian Society, marks its inaugural event, aiming to honor the long traditions of Asian American & Pacific Islander heritage through contemporary art.

Running from April 22 to May 31, 2024, the exhibition promises to immerse visitors in a world where the dragon reigns supreme, symbolizing benevolence, strength, and wisdom across various Asian cultures.

The grand unveiling of "dragon, etc." will take place on May 3 from 6:00 p.m to 9:30 p.m. Additionally, on May 17 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, visitors will have the opportunity to engage with the artists themselves during an artist talk and panel discussion.

Among the lineup of esteemed artists featured in "dragon, etc." are DiHua Yang, Emily Hanako Momohara, Eunshin Khang, Jee Eun Lee, John Lanzador, John Tsuchiya, Joomi Chung, Karl Feng, Radha Lakshmi, Setsuko LeCroix, Tom Tsuchiya, and Yu Ling Huang. The exhibition also welcomes DiHua Yang as a guest artist from the sponsor Elevar Design Group.

Notably, Joomi Chung, Associate Professor of Art, showcases her creativity with two compelling works: "Amalgam," a mixed media installation, and a mesmerizing 5-channel video installation of experimental animations.

“Taking the idea of the dragon as a sum of animals and its transformative nature, ‘Amalgam’ explores a mixture of heterogeneous forms,” explained Chung. “Made of wire, acrylic paint/medium, crochet, and needle felting, this installation project explores ways to materialize tactile and optical experiences through rhizomatic formation and expansion of abstract biomorphic forms. The five experimental animations are approached as drawings in time exploring multidimensional and transformative states of memory and multi-sensorial experience of time/space,” said Chung.

"dragon, etc." promises to be a captivating exploration of Asian mythology and contemporary artistic interpretations, inviting audiences to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of culture and creativity.
